How to choose the right chair to fit you!

We spend at least 6-8 hours sitting on our chairs in our workplace every day. Your chair is crucial to achieving a healthy, comfortable, and neutral working posture. Take 5 minutes today to learn what to look for when choosing a new chair – your body will thank you!

Correct sitting and standing posture when using a computer line drawing

When we sit, our pelvis tilts forward and our lower back curve changes to more of a c-shape. This causes the typical slouched forward posture which puts uneven pressure on our discs and can lead to back pain. How can we prevent this? Well the first step is to make sure you have a chair that has some adjustability. A dining room chair is not going to do the trick!

Use this checklist when choosing your next chair:

  1. Seat height moves up and down
  2. Armrests move up and down AT LEAST. Forward and back and side to side is a nice plus. If the armrests are fixed, consider removing them altogether.
  3. Backrest supports the natural S-Shape curvature of the spine
  4. Backrest is long enough to support your lower and upper back
  5. Lumbar support that moves up and down helps support the lower back and prevent slouching
  6. There should be a gap between the back of your knee and edge of the seat. Some seats will slide forward and back and this is especially helpful if you are tall or short.
  7. It’s best to try the chair out to make sure it feels right for you
